Bucharest is the largest city in Romania, located in the southeast of the country on the banks of the Dambovita River. Bucharest was first mentioned in documents as early as 1459. Since then it has gone through a variety of changes, becoming the state capital of Romania in 1862 and steadily consolidating its position as the centre of the Romanian mass media, culture and arts. Its eclectic architecture is a mix of historical (neo-classical), interbellum (Bauhaus and Art Deco), Communist-era and modern. In recent years, the city has been experiencing an economic and cultural boom. According to 1 July 2010 official estimates, Bucharest proper has a population of 1,942,254.

About UPB

University POLITEHNICA of Bucharest is the largest and the oldest technical university, among the most prestigious universities in Romania. The tradition of our institution, gained in more than 185 years through the efforts of the most important nation's schoolmasters, as well as of students' generations, is not the only convincing reason. Today, the University POLITEHNICA of Bucharest is undergoing a continuous modernization process, being involved in a permanent dialogue with great universities in Europe and all over the world.

The Faculty of Automatic Control and Computer Science is a center for research and education offering undergraduate (Bachelor) as well as graduate (Master and PhD) programs. Strong research groups exist in areas such as distributed systems, scientific computing, foundations of computer science, artificial intelligence and many more.

About Bucharest

Bucharest, Romania's capital, the nation's centre of cultural and economic life, was founded more than 500 years ago and is a natural starting point for visits to the country. During the 1930's its tree-lined boulevards and "fin de siecle" architecture gave it the nickname "Little Paris". There is even an Arc de Triomphe on the impressive Soseaua Kisseleff which is longer than the Champs Elysees and has ranges of trees which flower beautifully in the spring. Despite the massive reconstruction of the 1980s, Bucharest remains a Garden City, leafy and pleasant, with cafes open on sidewalks in the summer, and with boats on its lakes and rivers.

In Bucharest you will find majestic public buildings like the National History Museum and the main Post Office, whereas close to its Southern end there is the lovely Parcul Cismigiu (Cismigiu Park). Bulevardul (Boulevard) Magheru is parallel to Calea Victoriei and it hosts tourist and airline offices, cinemas and hotels.

You will be intrigued by the city's eclectic mixture of architecture, from Curtea Veche, the remains of Prince Vlad Tepes 15th century palace - he was the city's founder as well as the inspiration for "Dracula", - to Orthodox Churches, Second Empire mansions, the stolid Stalinist architecture of the communist years and the colossal 6,000 room Parliament House, the second largest building in the world after the Pentagon.

How to reach Conference Venue

By plane

From Henri Coanda Airport: The express 783 RATB line connects the International Airport with the center of Bucharest (approximately 60 minutes). The bus station is located just outside the airport, in front of the Domestic Flights Terminal. The bus ticket costs 5 RON (approximately 1.4 euros). The bus leaves every 15-30 minutes and takes the following route: Aeroportul International Henri Coanda Bucuresti - Terminal Curse Interne - Terminal Plecari Internationale - Otopeni - Aeroport "Aurel Vlaicu" Baneasa - Piata Presei Libere - Arcul de Triumf - Piata Victoriei - Piata Romana - Piata Universitatii - Piata Unirii.

The bus stops in Piata Victoriei (Victoria's Square) and Piata Unirii (Unirii's Square). Both are connected with corresponding Subway Stations. From Piata Universitatii, you can get to University POLITEHNICA of Bucharest by bus (take bus 336), or by metro (the closest metro exit is Politehnica station).

By taxi

The taxi cars bringing customers to the airport have free access in front of the International Departures Terminal and Domestic Flights Terminal. FLY taxi cars are available in front of the International Arrivals Terminal. For any information do not hesitate to contact the FLY Taxi Dispatch located in the International Arrivals Terminal waiting hall. For any complaints about the taxi services, you are kindly required to write down the car's registration number and contact Otopeni Air Transportation Police, telephone: +40212013242. Note: If you need to get to the airport from Bucharest, get a taxi from the ones on the list or from the ones mentioned below, as they are significantly cheaper than the Fly Taxi provided at the airport.

Taxis in Bucharest are cheap, as long as you take a taxi that has an association with a trusted taxi company. Private taxis are expensive, and can be dangerous, as drivers are simply not to be trusted. You should always make sure that any taxi you get into clearly displays the name and telephone number of the company to which it belongs. All taxis are obliged by law to display their tariffs on the side of the passenger door: make sure you check the tariff before getting in. Note that Pornire is the starting fee, and is usually displayed most prominently as it is cheap. It is the Tarif underneath you need to be aware of. Some taxis charge as much as 10 RON per kilometre. Be particularly alert to these rip-off taxis when taking one from outside the Gara de Nord, the Bucuresti Mall or any five-star hotel. Our advice is to avoid any tariff over 1.80 RON lei per kilometre.
